Tableau screenshots are displayed on monitors throughout Broad using scripts described here:
Tableau server configuration and support#ScreenshotScripts
The scripts are run on tableau.broadinstitute.org and write to \\gp-reports\tableau_files\screenshots\.
Monitors with IP addresses listed can be reached via VNC Viewer (Kristen Connolly, Zach Leber, Andy Hollinger)
Make sure to disable keyboard and mouse input in VNC Options/Preferences > Inputs before connecting so as to not disrupt the screensavers. No username or password required on monitors with old VNC version. Password required on monitors with new VNC version (same easy PW on all monitors).
SUMMARY AND INSTRUCTIONS
The computers hooked up to these monitors are licensed to run VNC.
- Primary method of managing these monitors/computers: [VNC Viewer software|https://www.realvnc.com/download/viewer/] from specific computers set up as access points (see list of these in attached PDF).
Those of us with VNC-accessing computers (list in attached PDF) can access all the Broad VNC machines (see BITS incident INC0078954 https://broad.service-now.com/navpage.do)
- Secondary method of managing these monitors/computers: Bluetooth keyboards paired with the monitors/computers (currently stored at Kristen's desk).
- Most of the computers are hidden either behind its monitor or on the other side of the wall its monitor is on.
To manage via VNC:
- Run VNC viewer. https://www.realvnc.com/download/viewer/
- Configure the Options/Inputs before connecting to the monitor machine (uncheck "enable mouse input")
- Enter the IP address of the target VNC server computer (see table below)
- This lets you see the monitor as it is.
- To actually change its settings, "enable mouse input" must be checked.
- Then, after making changes, the screensaver should just start after one minute (so you can check the screenshots)
The process of adding a new VNC server/monitor:
- Customer will tell BITS they want one. BITS will send them to us.
- If we agree to work on it, BITS will be in charge of getting it all setup and licensed.
- They can point it at a test folder, and then we can point it at the "real" folder of screenshots once they've been made. (mount, run, point at existing folder)
Tricks:
You may want to optimize the output for large screens by creating a duplicate view for screenshots and changing the resolution in Tableau to 1600x1000, increasing font size, removing filter cards, using custom views, etc.
